Bread from Scratch

This is a great place to start if you want to learn how to bake bread. This simple white bread bakes up golden brown and tasty.

Ingredients:

1 package active dry yeast (1/4 ounce)

1 teaspoon sugar plus 3 teaspoons

2-1/4 cup warm water (110-115°F)

1 teaspoon of salt

bread flour, 6-1/4 to 6-3/4 cup

2 tsp. canola oil

Preparation:

Dissolve yeast and 1/2 teaspoon sugar in warm water in a large mixing basin; set aside until bubbles appear on the surface. Combine the remaining 3 tablespoons sugar, salt, and 3 cups flour in a mixing bowl. Pour the yeast mixture into the flour mixture and whisk until smooth. 1/2 cup at a time, stir in the remaining flour to produce a soft dough.

Knead for 8-10 minutes on a floure surface until smooth and elastic. Place in an oiled mixing bowl and turn to grease the top. Allow 1 1/2 to 2 hours for the dough to rise in a warm environment.

Punch down the dough. Divide dough in half on a lightly floured surface. Form each one into a loaf. Place the batter in two greased 9x5-inch loaf pans. Allow 1 to 1-1/2 hours for the dough to double in size.

Bake at 375° for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow when tapped or internal temperature reaches 200°. Cool on wire racks after removing from pans.
